Over-pressurization of a pipeline is commonly caused by sudden changes in liquid velocity. This may occur when a pump starts or stops or a valve opens or closes etc. When a pressure rise occurs above normal operating pressure, it’s very important to analyze the rate of the pressure rise to determine the proper size and type of surge valve required. Based on fluid transient investigation, the surge protection system as a safeguard device to protect the pipeline system from severe hydraulic hammer (surge pressure).
Four such systems with each surge relief station of 40" size and have three duty relief runs of 12" size are employed in each station in an large crude oil unloading facility built to cater to few refineries crude oil supplies. Each of the relief valve runs has a nitrogen loaded modulating type surge relief valve which are very fast active and have typicall response times less than few mSec. The implementation of this surge relief system for the large diameter crude oil transfer pipeline will be discussed with here and how the high capacity fast acting Daniel surge relief valves are packaged to address this severe application.
The application of the Daniel surge relief solution has provided with adequate safety on this tough application and is like an insurance life line to the crude oil unloading pipeline system. The benefits of the employed technique will be discussed in detail in the presentation.
