Hydrogen is going to be a decisive, if not the decisive energy carrier of the future. Hydrogen cannot only easily be produced in a carbon neutral way, it can also readily be transported and stored. It is our vision at ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH that we will see the development of separate hydrogen networks until 2050 in order to connect generation with consumption hubs – not only in Germany, but also across Europe. However, we need to implement the necessary regulatory framework already today with the aim of giving frontrunner companies the opportunity to develop hydrogen transport solutions. Gas transmission system operators currently face such an obstacle in the incentive regulation system and efficiency benchmarks. This could be resolved by introducing a transformation budget for hydrogen.
