Pipeline operators already capture huge quantities of data but seldom exploit its full potential. This creates a range of opportunities to use advancements in data processing and artificial intelligence to address a variety of complex challenges. Using the learnings from Klarian’s work with a large British pipeline operator, we discuss some specific applications for hybrid AI for the optimisation and maintenance of pumping systems, with a focus on the data pre-requisites, and beneficial impacts successful deployment can bring. We also discuss why the implementation of AI is not simply a technical challenge but also an operational one, dependent on its adoption by stakeholders across pipeline operations.
