As the industry prepares for the conversion of pipelines for the transportation of hydrogen, tools must equally be ready to operate in hydrogen filled pipelines. Hydrogen readiness relates to tool design, the pigging operation as well as to defect detection. This presentation will focus on tool readiness as assessed according to the standard EN 16603-11, although design-preparation for operation in hydrogen filled pipelines is addressed as well . This standard identifies 9 levels of tool readiness ranging from component level design to actual flight proven mission. These include but are not limited to fracture toughness of components, material compatibility, explosion safety and tool friction.
