Abstract

Hydrogen combustion in gas turbines is anticipated to become the preferred technology for supporting intermittent renewable energy generation in deeply decarbonized scenarios. The HYFLEXPOWER project showcases a fully integrated power-to-hydrogen-to-power installation at an industrial paper mill facility in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France. This presentation offers a detailed overview of the successful development, installation, and demonstration of the power-to-hydrogen-to-power application in the pilot plant, featuring re-electrification through combustion in a Siemens Energy SGT-400 DLE industrial gas turbine using a mix of natural gas and up to 100% hydrogen. The 3-month long site campaign encompassed various blended fuel compositions and engine loads to represent diverse operational requirements. This innovation not only supports the goals of the HYFLEXPOWER project but is also particularly applicable to future hydrogen pipeline applications, where insights can be leveraged. It illustrates how gas turbines can be modified to operate on blended or pure hydrogen fuel, offering suitable technical solutions that can be retrofitted into existing assets or incorporated into new installations.
