A 12-inch gas pipeline in Indonesia transversing diverse terrain, approx. 7KM long, comprising of 10.3 mm thick seamless carbon steel carrier pipe cladded with a 3mm stainless steel layer inside had to be inspected utilizing inline inspection tools. The primary objective was to assess the integrity of the carrier pipe as well as the clad through the identification and characterization of metal loss anomalies, in-turn ensuring the safe and efficient operation of this 12in pipeline.
3P Services was asked to perform a metal loss inspection of this cladded pipeline. Following a thorough technical evaluation, 3P Services proposed an 12in GEO/MFL/SRD combo tool. The tool combined a heavy wall magnetizer with a geometry measurement segment and special SRD sensors in stand-off configuration. The combination of these sensor technologies on a single inspection tool allowed a comprehensive metal loss examination of the cladded pipeline which is prone to internal corrosion and stress-related defects.
The project was successfully executed in collaboration with local authorities and representatives adhering to stringent safety and environmental regulations. The challenges and their solutions of this outstanding project are explained in this paper.
