Abstract

Advanced ILI imaging technology enables the capture of more and better data than ever before, but that doesn’t necessarily lead to meaningful understanding of pipeline anomalies. In this paper, we’ll look at how even the most robust dataset can benefit from data analysis led by people who understand pipeline issues. We’ll walk through a series of real cases where an anomaly initially appeared one way, until further data analysis revealed something different. We’ll discuss how reliance on data without context can lead to mischaracterization of anomalies, potentially resulting in unnecessary digs or missed integrity threats. We’ll see how true Ultra-High Resolution (UHR) ILI addresses this by bringing together multiple types of sensor data and interpretive skill to help operators gain a comprehensive understanding of pipeline integrity.
