Abstract

The field of pipeline leak detection systems (LDS) continuously evolves. This includes the methods used to perform leak detection and localization, the improvement of performance, new services and business models as well as additional requirements on leak detection systems for example regarding cyber security and legislation. This paper is designed to give an overview on current trends and recent developments in the field of leak detection.

The paper gives a detailed overview of improvements on leak detection capabilities for example by implementing artificial intelligence during leak detection system implementation or on new methods for leak localization. Also, different models for monitoring are described from onsite installation to remote monitoring with connected services to detect leaks and product theft where operators benefit from a cost-effective approach that allows them to focus on core business activities while ensuring their pipeline infrastructure is continuously monitored and protected. Furthermore, the paper describes measures to ensure cyber security on deployed systems and how to maintain cyber security based on current legislation and standards.
