Abstract

Wood will share key lessons from the detailed FEED they performed for a 110km hydrogen network in UK , which also included blending design for existing transmission and distribution pipelines, covering

What are the safety differences for H2 pipelines

What are the code requirements for hydrogen pipelines?

How do the mechanical design requirements for H2 pipelines differ from natural gas lines?

How do the line pipe requirements differ?

What materials testing is needed to use the high yield strength of modern steel line pipe?

What is the fracture mechanical pre-qualification status of existing pipe mills?

How long will it take to perform the pre-qualification testing?

What is the technology readiness of other components in the pipeline system?

The hydrogen pipeline is designed to be ALARP and ensure the public are safe along the route. The differences in the fire and explosion risks are presented along with the QRA methodology and findings. The impact of hydrogen on the failure probabilities is presented. The need for early QRA is identified.

The impact of the new IGEM hydrogen supplement on pipelines design will be presented and how this impacted the design capacity, flow rate, pressure, and wall thickness.

A novel low stress and high stress design approach is presented which allows for changes in design codes and understanding of the fatigue crack growth rates.

The impact of hydrogen on the fatigue crack growth rate, material toughness and allowable defect size are presented for each approach.

The technical readiness of components in contract with hydrogen based on a series of meetings with selected suppliers is presented along with the pre-qualification testing duration.

The measures taken to manage the significant differences in the safety, materials and engineering for H2 pipelines from natural gas pipelines are discussed along with the impact on project CAPEX and schedule.
