Abstract

Pipeline operators face increasing demands to ensure energy supply security while minimising emissions, downtime, and production losses. Traditional intervention approaches that include a full shutdown, depressurisation, nitrogen purging or recompression are increasingly misaligned with today’s performance, safety, and sustainability goals.

This presentation highlights a new way of thinking, combining proven isolation tools with a fresh operational philosophy. Using qualified and trusted technology applied in an innovative way, provides operators fail-safe, double-block isolation to enable maintenance activities to be safely conducted on live pipelines. This approach minimises operational disruption, avoids releasing emissions into the atmosphere and keeps production online.

Real world examples will demonstrate how these methods deliver results in scenarios including valve replacements, pipeline rerouting, hot tapping, decommissioning and emergency repairs, including large-diameter, lengthy pipelines. Adopting such practices offers a clear pathway to regulatory compliance and tangible reductions in methane and CO₂ emissions, while minimising impacts on production.

Crucially, these proven isolation services are not limited to current natural gas and oil applications. They are also ready to serve the energy transition, with applicability to emerging mediums such as hydrogen and CO₂. This makes them not only a solution for today’s operational challenges but a foundation for tomorrow’s low-carbon infrastructure.

The presentation will quantify avoided downtime and emissions, provide decision criteria for selecting isolation methods, and demonstrate how operators can transition from traditional approaches toward future-ready interventions that combine proven reliability with innovative application. Let’s start today by doing things differently.
