Abstract
Today’s pipelines are aged and we are witnesses that the coatings have not met the designed, rather extended lifetime. New pipelines are designed with a 50 to 70 year lifetime but are coatings able to meet such requirements. It is possible and the paper discusses non aging polymers that can attain protection over the assets for its designed life. To attain this, a different perspective is shown, form different type of adhesion mechanism, polymers that do not transfer stress and are independent of shear. Underground pipes are protected using cathodic protection to extend the life of the coatings but the consumption of the CP is in many cases accelerated due to premature failures of the coating or carelessness during the installation. Looking into the future of environment and safety the paper also touches base on the safety aspect of the coatings with no hazardous materials.
