Challenges and successful finding during 36” Ultrasonic Geometry expedite development and inspection campaign, a Case Study

Colonial Pipeline approached NDT Global with a need to inspect a 36" crude oil pipeline known because its high density of dents and metal loss. In January 2018, NDT Global worked closely with Colonial Pipeline to complete a feasibility study, developing a 36" ultrasonic geometry robot making it available to test the module in September same year.

Over the next month, the 36" pipeline was inspected utilizing different robots; Evo Series 1.0 Ump and Evo Series 1.0 Atlas UG, with the intention to locate metal loss, dents, deformations and potential combined threats in the pipeline.

Additional to the short time frame, the operational conditions and length of the pipeline force Colonial Pipeline and NDT Global to come up with a plan to inspect the pipeline with both robots with a tool launch difference of a few hours. As planned, both robots were successfully recovered.

During the first weeks of main data analysis, NDT Global discover a buckle type deformation with a 4% OD depth affecting a girth weld, triggering an immediate priority for Colonial Pipeline. After a meticulous review and correlation with historic ILI results, Colonial Pipeline setup a expedite plan to dig and repair this feature.

This paper will address the challenges faced during the robot development, inspection execution challenges and timely repair of the reported buckle.
