Abstract
Five different welding methods are nowadays applied in pipeline construction: Stick metal arc welding with electrodes, FCAW welding with self-shielding wire, STT-MAG welding and MAG orbital welding with shielding gas. In future, also laser welding technology will be applied, namely the patented VIETZ-Pipeline-Laser-System.

Which welding method is most suitable for a specific project, from the economic point of view, can be stipulated according to 9 criteria. Each of the welding methods nowadays used in pipeline construction will be analyzed on the basis of these criteria in this talk.

The VIETZ-Pipeline-Laser-System will be a revolution in pipeline construction. As soon as the field trials with this system will be completed and the momentarily still existing edge misalignment problems will be solved, serial production will be initiated.

The VPL-System will bring about immense cost reductions and phenomenally short construction times for pipeline projects.
