Abstract
In 2012 Shawcor (world leader in integrated solutions for pipeline coatings) needed to replace their shop floor management system in their pipe coating facilities, and realized they could use this opportunity to differentiate themselves from their competitors and provide a value add service to their customers. They hired Vintri Technologies to work with them to create and implement a solution that not only provided a web/collaborative platform and integration with their new global ERP systems (IFS), but also handled the added benefit of material traceability. VintriPLANT is now live in all US Shawcor plants, is rolling out across Canada in 2015, and globally in 2016. Now, using sequential barcoding and data validation, manual data entry is reduced, and electronic validated pipe data is captured from the moment the pipe enters the yard up until it is delivered to the Operator. Having no manual identification of pipe allows workers to accurately track activities and data for pipe with complete traceability. This functionality allows Shawcor to move away from manual entry or handwritten form of pipe IDs, heat numbers, pipe length, etc. Pipe data is available both on a real time, secure web portal and in an electronic data book, giving the ability to run customer reports on any defined criteria to answer inquiries from a regulator, the supply chain, or a customer. VintriPLANT’s data validation and material traceability provides a market differentiator for Shawcor that not only provides a value-add for services provided now, but positions them for growth in the future. The pipeline industry is moving from a ‘contractor build-owner operate’ model to an integrated supply chain model where every pipe will be tagged, every component will be traceable, GPS location confirmed, and all related data for every component will be captured and monitored throughout the pipeline lifecycle.
