Physicochemical effect of different types soils from México in the SCC of low carbon pipeline steels

This work analyzed physicochemical effect of different types of soils from México on the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) process in contact with low carbon pipeline steels. The soils analyzed included clays, silt, sands and mixtures. Soils were obtained from right of way (ROW) in South of Mexico, sampling around 1.5 m depth close to pipelines. A physicochemical and textural analysis of the soils was carried out. SCC susceptibility and corrosion mechanism was investigated using slow strain rate tests (SSRT) performed at strain rate of 1 x 10-6 sec-1 in a glass autoclave containing the soils. The soils were saturated with deionized water and moisture values were determined. Some SSRT were monitored through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and supplemented with potentiodynamic polarization curves (PCs). After SRRT the fracture surface were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SCC susceptibility assessment through NACE TM 198 and ASTM G129 was carried out.
