Abstract
A new system developed and manufactured by ROPLAST was successfully applied to protect pipes stored in the NordStream pipeline construction. Pipe end caps from RoPlasthan® elastomers were put on the stored pipe joints after concrete coating. These caps included a system that continuously monitors each pipe joint’s status in real time and communicates to a central monitoring system. This way,
  • Protection from contamination of pipes
  • Reduction of corrosion of pipe cutbacks
  • Warning of potential third party damage; and
  • Complete traceability of pipe joints throughout the logistics process
were achieved.

The system combined pipe caps, sensor technology, a self-assembling wireless network, and a central control system with complete documentation and data evaluation.

After more than 2 years in operation, an overviews of the system and its advantages is given.
