Pipeline Leak Detection
Thursday, 11 May 2023 14:00 - 16:30
Demand for pipeline leak detection and location systems is increasing rapidly. Unfortunately general knowledge about these systems is still limited and the view that these systems ‘will only detect catastrophic leaks’ or ‘give false alarms all the time’ is still heard regularly. This view may be the result of bad experience in the past, unrealistic expectations, or a combination of the two. This workshop shows the benefits of using a leak detection system which combines several API 1130 technologies into one system. Following an introduction to the principles behind PipePatrol E-RTTM and its model supported, statistical classification method, field data is presented to show the capabilities of the system in a real-world, operational environment. It will be shown that modern leak detection systems do allow leak detection without false alarms, on liquid and even on gas pipelines operated in dynamic (transient) conditions. Historical Data will be used to show capabilities of the system while simulating a leak test in real-time. The results of this life demonstration will be discussed.
Agenda:
14:00 – 15:00 Basics of pipeline leak detection
The first part of the workshop describes the basics of pipeline leak detection: different systems and models, technical limitations and possibilities, methods to eliminate false alarms to almost zero. Examples of integrating the system into different SCADA architectures and data transmission options such as DSL, Ethernet, or wireless are part of the seminar as well as international rules and standards.
15:30 – 16:30 Practical application and demonstration
In the second part pipeline details from a previous project will be used to explain their effects on the leak detection system. Different concepts will be introduced to overcome potential problems while keeping the focus on a maximum benefit at minimum costs.
16:15 End of training / Discussion
