Abstract

Mero CR is the main company providing emergency storage of strategic oil reserves in the Czech Republic and owns and operates the Central Oil Tank Farm near Nelahozeves and further operates two Crude oil pipelines in Czech republic and Germany.

A case study from company MERO CR is presented by which the operational experience with inspection results demonstrate the added value of using advanced NDT methods from an operator perspective in the integrity management of crude oil tank farm non – piggable piping. These methods with the increased precision and reliability of data are identified as key factors, together with the experienced a highly qualified operator experts. The enhanced information needed particularly in managing integrity and successful internal corrosion mitigation.

These enhancements have then enabled a basis for accurate corrosion rate estimation and life-time predictions of assets. With qualitatively improved data it is possible for the operator to allocate effort effectively and keep long-term reliability of all critical infrastructure assets.

Further this case study covers internal corrosion mitigation experiences and practice. This includes innovative and ingenious approach including cleaning and internal coating of long lengths of existing piping on site using intelligent robots without need of cutting the piping.

Further this case study shows non - traditional approach during piping reconstruction with re-using existing piping, that was taken from site, cleaned, renewed, coated and put back into operation instead of using new pipe material. This approach is innovative from the environmental point of view, as well as, with the respect to the fact that the steel piping material was not available in the market and suppliers as well were not able to guarantee the price and supplies after the crisis on the market with steel that was caused by the Russian war that started in Ukraine.
